Backpacks are equippable items in State of Decay that expand the survivor's number of inventory slots. Survivors with backpack can equip themselves with more weapons/consumables, greatly improving chances of surviving; in addition, they can carry more loot before having to deposit at a Supply Locker. A survivor without a backpack has 4 inventory slots; having a Small Backpack adds 4 slots (to 8) and Large Backpack adds 6 (to 10).

Backpacks are often found in campsites, cabins and houses, and many survivors spawn with one.

Types of backpacks[]

Small Backpack[]

Small Backpack-infocard

Description: Traveling light is good but having what you need is better
Slots: +4
Weight: 1.6 lbs

This type of backpack is much more common than Large Backpacks. Due to its small size, it is not suitable for the purpose of scavenging. However, 8 inventory slots are more than enough for a firearm, a melee weapon, ammunition, painkillers, snacks and other consumables. For this reason as well as its lighter weight, small backpacks are handy for non-Powerhouse characters when scavenging is not a priority.

Large Backpack[]

Large Backpack

Description: More carrying capacity, but it’s bulky.
Slots: +6
Weight: 3.3 lbs

The Large Backpack has 2 more slots, but is 1.7 lbs heavier. Naturally, this backpack is great for the Powerhouse characters, who has +15 lbs encumbrance limit. This backpack is ideal for scavenging, as long as the player keeps a watchful eye on the survivor’s carrying weight and avoid unnecessary fights.

Trivia[]

  • There are 6 variants of Large Backpack (3 regular, 3 army variants) and 32 variants of Small Backpack (29 regular, 3 army variants, however only 28 regular variants are searchable) in the game. In addition, all army variants are not searchable in any of the containers (Story). A few new variants are added in Lifeline. The difference is purely aesthetic.
  • The Large Backpack is modeled after an Eberlestock G4 Operator Pack (a scout/sniper pack) with rifle scabbard stowed. The in-game model is scaled down to roughly 50 % size of the real backpack.
  • Looking at the game's files, inside items.xml are unused large backpacks called Low Backpack and School Backpack. It is unclear why they are not searchable in any containers in the game.
